Setting-Up WEP, WPA or WPA2 Wireless Security on a Router
  Question
How do I set up WEP, WPA or WPA2 on a Wireless Router?
  Answer

This article will explain the difference between WEP, WPA, WPA2 and how to set up each of them.

i. WEP
ii. WPA
iii. WPA2

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a 64-bit key with 10 hexadecimal digits or a 128-bit WEP key with 26 hexadecimal digits. This encryption will prevent other users from connecting to a wireless network using your own WEP key. It will also protect your wireless transmissions/communications from being accessed or received by other users.

To setup WEP Wireless Security on your Linksys Router follow the steps below:

Setting-Up the Wireless Router to use WEP

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

NOTE: If you are using Mac to access the router’s web-based setup page, click here.

Step 2:

When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click Wireless  then Wireless Security.

Step 3:
Under Security Mode select WEP.

NOTE: If the screen on your router’s web-based setup page looks different, click here.

Step 4:
Select any number on the Default Transmit Key field to determine which key you’ll be using. In this example, we selected 1.

Step 5:
Under WEP Encryption select 64 bits 10 hex digits.

Step 6:
Type a wireless network password of your choice such as “MySecretKey,” then click Generate.

NOTE: You should come up with a password that is unique for your network and is a combination of numbers and letters up to 16 characters.

Step 7:
The result will be a string of random characters. Copy the resulting string since this will be the key to your wireless network.

NOTE: Do not give this key to anyone. This will be your wireless network’s key.

Step 8:

Click .

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a Wi-Fi standard that was designed to improve the security features of WEP. WPA is stronger than WEP encryption. PSK and PSK2, types of WPA, give you a choice of two encryption methods, TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), which incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers, and AES (Advanced Encryption System), which utilizes a symmetric 128-Bit block data encryption.

To setup WPA Wireless Security on your Linksys router, follow the steps below:

Setting-Up the Wireless Router to Use WPA

Step 1:

Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

NOTE: If you are using Mac to access the router's web-based setup page, click here.

Step 2:

When the router’s web-based, setup page appears, click Wireless and select Wireless Security.

Step 3:

Select WPA Personal under the Security Mode drop-down menu.

Step 4:

Select TKIP on WPA Algorithms.

Step 5:
Enter your desired WPA Key on the WPA Shared Key field such as “MySecretKey.” This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network.

NOTE:
Do not give this key to anyone. This key will secure your wireless network. Leave Group Key Renewal to 3600 seconds.

Step 6:

Click .

Setting Up WPA2 Personal

NOTE: Please repeat Step 1 & Step 2 from the above instructions.

Step 3:

Select WPA2 Personal as your Security Mode.  Then enter your Shared Secret as your password. This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network.

NOTE: Do not give this key to anyone. This key will secure your wireless network. Leave Group Key Renewal to 3600 seconds.
